Exion Microneedling RF

A step further from traditional microneedling treatments, Exion combines microneedling with fractional RF (radio frequency) and AI (artificial intelligence) to treat deeper layers of the skin.

Sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, and skin laxity are common concerns that can be targeted with the treatment. It works by stimulating collagen and elastin production, as well as hyaluronic acid, prompting the skin to heal in the precise treatment areas.

What is Exion Microneedling RF?

Exion combines microneedling, RF and AI for advanced treatment, targeting a variety of skin concerns. The Exion Fractional RF system delivers energy to the deep skin layers, while the needles from the microneedling component do not need to be inserted too far into the skin. At the same, AI controls and optimises energy delivery for efficient and precise single-pass procedures.

The treatment stimulates collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, helping the skin to regenerate in the treated areas.

Treatment areas

Exion Microneedling RF can treat multiple skin concerns in various areas. Depending on your needs, you may be able to target more than one concern and treatment area within one session. Treatable areas and skin concerns include:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Arms
  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Back
  • Sun damage
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Scarring, including acne scarring
  • Skin laxity
  • Stretch marks

Suitable candidates

Exion Microneedling RF can be suitable for all skin types. It can be particularly suitable for those with deeper wrinkles, scarring and skin damage since the treatment targets deeper layers of the skin than alternative methods.

There are some contraindications for the treatment. These can include active infections or open wounds, as microneedles might worsen infections or hinder healing. Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea might worsen due to microneedling RF’s mechanical and thermal effects. Those with bleeding disorders or on blood-thinning medications may experience increased bleeding and longer healing times. Those with a history of skin cancer or undergoing cancer treatments may also be unsuitable, as the procedure’s effects on skin cells and healing might interfere with cancer treatments’ effectiveness.

Before your treatment, you will have a consultation at our Brisbane clinic to discuss what you want to treat and determine if you are a suitable candidate.

What to expect

Before your treatment, we can apply a topical numbing cream if you are concerned about comfort. Once the numbing cream has taken effect, microneedles will be used to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface as the device’s applicator is passed over the skin.

As the microneedles puncture the skin, radiofrequency energy is simultaneously delivered to the deeper layers. This combination of micro-injuries and heat from the RF energy stimulates the skin’s natural healing response and encourages collagen and elastin production, as well as hyaluronic acid. AI carefully controls the RF energy for precise treatment. The microneedles’ depth and RF energy intensity can be adjusted based on your skin type, concerns, and treatment goals. This customisation allows for tailored treatments that address skin concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and overall skin texture.

You may feel warmth and a prickly sensation from the microneedles, but treatment is generally tolerable. There may be some slight redness and mild swelling in the treated area immediately following the procedure, which is a normal response to the micro-injuries and heat.

Results can usually be seen about one month after treatment. However, some patients may require multiple sessions, meaning the most noticeable results can take about three months.

The treatment works by prompting the skin’s natural healing response, which will take time. You can see noticeable improvements as the skin produces more collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.

After the session, you will receive post-treatment instructions and skincare recommendations to optimise healing and results. It’s essential to follow these instructions, including avoiding direct sunlight, wearing sunscreen, and using gentle skincare products to maintain the benefits of the treatment.

We will also recommend keeping the treated area clean and refraining from picking at any scabs or flaking skin that might occur as part of the natural healing process, as this could lead to unwanted scarring or pigment changes. Applying cool compresses and staying well-hydrated can also help alleviate any discomfort and reduce swelling.

As your skin heals and regenerates, it’s important to be patient and allow the full benefits of the treatment to become evident. If you have any concerns or questions about your aftercare routine or the healing process, please get in touch with our team for guidance.

Side effects and risks

The risks associated with combined microneedling and radiofrequency treatments are generally low, but it’s important to be fully informed of risks and side effects and how to minimise them.

Common side effects include temporary redness and mild swelling due to micro-injuries and RF heat. Discomfort might occur during and after treatment but can usually be managed with cold compresses and pain medication if needed. Pinpoint bleeding or bruising can occur but usually fades within a few days. Proper post-treatment care is essential to prevent infection. Rarely, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation can occur but can be minimised with sun protection and adherence to instructions.

We will discuss the treatment side effects during your consultation before your treatment session.

The treatment is generally tolerable, but we can apply a topical numbing cream at the beginning of your session if desired.

The number of treatment sessions you need will depend on your skin concern and treatment goals. We can determine the ideal number of sessions during your consultation.
