Who is a good candidate for Gynaecomastia surgery?
The ideal candidate for male breast reduction is someone who has:
- Substantial glandular tissue development or fatty breast tissue
- Puffy nipple-areola complexes
- A lack of masculine chest contour
- Body anxiety or embarrassment
- Overall good health
- Realistic wants and expectations
What causes Gynaecomastia?
When the male body produces too little testosterone or too much oestrogen, the glandular tissue of the breast swells. This may be present in one or both breasts.
Male breast enlargement may be a result of:
- Puberty
- Ageing
- Obesity, which can result in excess oestrogen
- Disease: thyroid problems, cancer, kidney failure, liver disease
- Prescription medications
- Illegal drugs: anabolic steroids, marijuana, or heroin
Recovery from a Gynaecomastia surgery
Recovery varies from patient to patient. Rather than pain, most patients describe the sensation as discomfort and mild aches that are easily controlled with over-the-counter pain medication.
After the procedure, patients will require a dressing change at one week and two-week intervals. We provide Out of Town Patients with a letter containing detailed dressing change instructions to give to their GP if you cannot attend dressing change appointments at the Brisbane clinic.
Most patients should expect to take around one to two weeks off work. Patients with office jobs can usually return to work after one week; however, more physically demanding jobs will require a longer recovery period. Patients can usually return to their normal activities, including gym exercises, by six weeks.
Patients will experience swelling, and there may be bruising after the procedure. Major swelling usually subsides by three months, and the final results are noticeable at around the one-year mark. A compression garment will need to be worn continuously for six weeks after surgery.
We will schedule postoperative appointments throughout the following year. These appointments can be conducted via our Virtual Waiting Room or in person at our Brisbane clinic.

Scarring from Gynaecomastia surgery
Scarring depends on the extent of tissue removed. Incisions are placed discreetly to minimise scar visibility. Although chest hair will usually cover the small incisions, most scarring will fade over time with appropriate postoperative care.
