Hyaluronidase Consent

WHAT IS BEING INJECTED?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that is used to dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers. It works by breaking down the product into small sugars which are easily absorbed into the body.

It can be used for aesthetic purposes or in an emergency to treat complications, such as vascular occlusion or impending necrosis (tissue death) resulting from dermal filler.

RESULTS

Once injected, Hyaluronidase works immediately, but results are visible after 2 – 3 days and optimal at around 2 weeks post procedure. Results are permanent, but multiple treatments may be required depending on the concern or treatment area.

UNSUITABLE PATIENTS

  • Hypersensitivities to product ingredients (including local anaesthetic).
  • Active skin issue in the treatment area, including cold sores, sunburn, eczema, psoriasis, cancer.
  • Active or recent viral or bacterial infection (coughs, colds, flu).
  • Prone to hypertrophic scarring.
  • Allergies to product ingredients, including local anaesthetic.

RISK & SIDE EFFECTS

Side Effects: hyaluronidase dissolves hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body. There may be a reduction in skin elasticity and volume and associated asymmetry which may be temporary or permanent.

Risks of injection: bleeding, bruising, haematoma, damage to underlying structures. In rare cases this could cause continuous problems in appearance, sensation or function and may require medical intervention to treat or may be permanent.

Reactions: reactions rarely occur but can include an immediate reaction causing swelling, and very rarely life-threatening anaphylaxis. Delayed reactions localised to the skin can cause nodules, lumps or bumps or very rarely sterile abscesses.

Local Reactions: oedema, erythema, pain and itching, urticaria, and angioedema.

Infection: Bacterial, viral or fungal infections can occur post procedure. Rarely infections can occur months later as biofilm reactions. Injections in the lip area may trigger recurrence of cold sores which may require treatment.

Lumps, Bumps, Swellings: Temporary unwanted visual side effects may cause dissatisfaction or distress, and include an increase in asymmetry, swelling, lumps, bumps, puffiness, or surface irregularities.

Skin Changes: The procedure can be are rarely associated with skin pigment changes, the formation of thread veins or new capillaries, and other blemishes. These may be temporary, require further intervention, or may be permanent.

Treatment Failure: it is possible that the procedure will fail to remedy the problem as often hyaluronic acid is not the sole cause of lumps, bumps or reactions which may be caused by other materials.
