A guide to Winter Skin
Winter in Australia can be a magical time, with clear crisp mornings and evenings spent snuggled up next to a heater or fireplace. But winter can also wreak havoc on our complexions. With all that cold wind and dry heat, you may find your skin has been left dry, dehydrated and in need of some TLC. This can often lead to other skin issues such as redness, irritation and sensitivity, as well as rough, flaky skin.
Here we introduce a few of our favourite skin tips, products and treatments to help you combat the dreaded ‘Winter skin’.
Hydrate from the inside out:
Skip that second (or third) hot coffee and instead reach for a glass of hydrating water. Even better, make it one with Vida Glow natural marine collagen added in! Increasing your daily water intake will help eliminate waste products and hydrate internally, while adding collagen peptides can help stimulate fresh collagen production to support the natural ageing process.
You can purchase your Vida Glow Collagen in clinic or online through our online store.
Increase your essential fatty acid (EFA) intake:
This can be done through diet or supplementation. EFAs may help to maintain a healthy and functioning cell membrane which allows for more effective transfer of nutrients into the cell and waste products out of the cell. EFAs have been shown to reduce inflammation, acne, skin sensitivity and support a healthy barrier function.
At Inigo Cosmetic we recommend and stock the O Cosmedics EFA’s or the Vida Glow Multi 360.
Dial down the temperature:
We know there’s nothing better than coming home and having a hot shower, sitting in front of the fire or sleeping with the heater on in winter, however this can lead to dehydrated skin. Take cooler showers and try to avoid prolonged, close exposure to heating devices. Instead, layer up the blankets and don your best fluffy socks to keep you warm. We recommend investing in a humidifier too!
Tweak your skincare routine:
-Hydrate topically with serums, moisturisers and masks that contain hydrating and barrier supporting ingredients such as ceramides, panthenol (vitamin B5), Glycerin and hyaluronic acid or tremella.
– Exfoliate your skin, including your body and lips, to remove dead skin build up and allow for better product penetration. But don’t over-do it, over exfoliating can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier leading to further dryness, flaking skin and irritation. Our favourite exfoliating products for dry skin in winter are the iS Clinical Active peel pads which is an at home peel system that can be used on the face and body to gently exfoliate while providing hydration, rejuvenation and antioxidant protection. Another favourite is the O Cosmedics 3 in 1 fruit enzyme which helps to release redundant cells and stimulate new healthy ones to promote healthy, smooth, and hydrated skin.
– Let’s not forget about keeping your lips exfoliated and hydrated too. The iS Clinical lip duo contains a lip polish to exfoliate and smooth as well as the youth lip elixir to help soften, hydrate and plump.
– Switch out your gel cleansers for a cream, balm or oil. These types of cleansers will still effectively cleanse your skin whilst leaving your skin hydrated. Our favourite cream cleansers for dry skin in Winter are Rationale #4 the cleanser and iS Clinical cream cleanser.
-Treat yourself to a weekly or bi-weekly hydrating mask, such as the O-cosmetics Hydra plus Sleep-in mask. This mask helps support healthy skin function and hydrates your skin.
Winter is the perfect time to invest in professional skin treatments:
Radiant summer skin is made in winter. Invest in professional in-clinic skin and injectable treatments during winter such as HydraFacial, Lumecca IPL, Healite and Skin Boosters.
HydraFacial is considered to be a medical grade hydra dermabrasion device that uses vortex technology designed to carry out a patented three-part regimen: cleansing, exfoliating, and then infusing the skin with intensive serums to moisturise, brighten, plump and protect. Hydrafacial is the perfect treatment to have in winter as it boosts skin hydration and exfoliates dead skin build up.
Lumecca is an intense pulsed light treatment designed to treat pigmented and vascular lesions such as freckles, sun damage, age spots, rosacea, uneven skin tone and telangiectasia (spider veins). After one treatment, you may see noticeable improvement in the health and clarity of your skin. Winter is the perfect time to start IPL treatments as there is less sun exposure and therefore less risk of pigmentation. Additionally, there is generally more contrast between your pigment or vascular lesions and your skin, making the treatment more effective.
Healite LED light therapy utilises different wavelengths of light to rejuvenate, strengthen, hydrate and heal your skin. It promotes collagen production while treating skin conditions such as acne, redness, psoriasis, eczema and rosacea. At Inigo, our Healite LED Light Therapy Facial includes a skin analysis, imaging, deep cleanse, Healite and finishing serums. Healite can also be added on to any of our skin treatment for only $49. LED therapy is particularly effective in winter as it helps reduce inflammation and combats dry skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.
Skin Boosters aim to stimulate collagen production and cell renewal while promoting overall skin hydration. When injected superficially under the skin, Skin Boosters absorb and retain moisture in the area, which may create long term hydration. Skin boosters also contain essential nutrients and antioxidants which may help protect against free radical damage. Skin boosters are one of our most popular treatments during Winter as they can help restore skin hydration and leave skin with a glow.
If you are not quite sure what treatment is best for you, we recommend you book a skin consultation with one of our experienced practitioners. Consultations are $75 and are redeemable off your next treatment with us. But if you are ready to book your next skin treatment, you can save time and book online using the link below!
